Easy Eco-friendly Changes To Make In Your Daily Life
Published on 21 February 2017
Going green doesn’t mean you have to turn vegan or live electricity-free. It’s about making small changes that can have a big impact on the environment, as well as your wellbeing and bank balance! All it takes is a handful of little changes: try these five simple ways to live a more eco-friendly life.
These days electronic bills are the preferred option for banks and many other suppliers, and you’ll find it much easier to organise digital files than paperwork. You’ll help reduce the number of trees needed to be cut down to produce the paper, plus you’ll have less papers creating clutter in your home.
Did you know that using your dishwasher instead of hand-washing dishes actually saves you energy and uses less soap? And washing your clothes in cold water will save you dollars on your electricity bill, too. Plus you’re less likely to shrink clothes or have colour run when you use cold water, so you could save on your fashion budget as well! However when it comes to drying your laundry, skip the dryer and opt for line-drying instead. Where possible, swap out chemical cleaning products for environmentally-friendly ones.
Bring your own shopping bag
If you purchased a whole bunch of eco-friendly shopping bags back when they first came out, but have gotten out of the habit of using them since, it’s time to get them back out and come up with a routine to ensure you don’t forget to take them along when grocery shopping –or any kind of shopping! Keep them in your car (not in the boot – you’ll only ever see them after you’ve finished your grocery shopping and are loading up the car). Place them where you will see them each time you hop in. Then, once you’ve unloaded your groceries, head straight back out to the car to put them back. Also look for one or two eco-bags that fold down into a small pouch so you can carry them in your handbag at all times.
Turn your computer off at the end of the day
It’s such a simple thing but it can save you money on your electricity bill in the long run, and uses up less natural resources. Even in sleep mode your computer is using up electricity so when you’re not using it, shut it down completely.
Take your own mug to your local coffee shop
The amount of wastage our addiction with takeaway coffees has caused has made a considerable negative impact on the environment, and it’s only getting worse. You can still get your morning coffee fix on the go, without contributing to the wastage, by taking along your own cup to your coffee shop each morning. You should also consider refilling your own BPA-free water bottle throughout the day rather than buying plastic water bottles. Your wallet and the environment will thank you for it!
